By becoming a premium member, you are intitled to use our ArtistIP (AIP) and Artist Momentum tools to help you define which of the top 970 most actively traded auction market artists might best meet your investment/collecting goals based on your artist performance metrics weights.

In addition to the basic information that allows us to compute performance for each object we also record work specific information such as size, authorship, date, medium and auction house pre-sale estimates. This information can be found when using the AIP tool. This tool generates graphs of performance as a function of purchase year, sale year, purchase price and auction interval for all sold (sale and purchase price known), unsold (only purchase price known) and unknown (only most recent sale price known) works.

For sold works we have the purchase and sale price and the auction interval between sale and purchase. This gives us the ability to compute and plot the works compound annual return (CAR). For unsold work we know the purchase price and the auction house low estimate at the time of sale. This allows us to compute and plot the return to low estimate. For unknown works we know the most recent sale price and the auction house low estimate at sale which allows us to compute and plot the percentage above or below the low estimate the work achieved. Clicking on each dot on the performance graphs yields this information for that work. For most work, we also supply a thumbnail picture. Clicking on the thumbnail increases its size.

We also provide an estimate of the current value of each of the almost 60,000 sold, unsold and unknown works in our database. The estimated market value is created by using the artists’ mean of all their works individual CAR since 2000 to bring the historic prices to the present. If there is more than one price available, the results are then averaged.

A second estimated value uses the CAR from sales since 2014 to bring forward the prices to the present which are then averaged.

Having only a purchase price for work in our unsold database we use it to bring that price to the present again using the artist’s mean return. Having only a sale price for works in our unknown database we use it to bring that price to the present again using the artist’s mean return.

For sold work we also supply an often more conservative third estimate based on using an appropriate and proprietary artist liquidity index to bring the most recent sale price to the present.

The current value estimate results can be found at the bottom of the list generated when you click on any of the performance graph dots.

As part of the AIP tool, we also give the user the opportunity to search for this information by artist name and work title.

We create a simple measure of art market momentum/enthusiasm for individual artists by computing the willingness of buyers and sellers to transact their art works at auction at a price above or below a "mark to market price" of the same artwork purchased at auction at an earlier time period. We compute a momentum value for any artist with at least 5 repeat sale pairs in our sold database. There are currently over 1,900 such artists.

Premium members also get proprietary, premedia, access to our ongoing research by clicking on the resource tab. In addition, click on the Media tab in the top navigation bar to get the latest media articles that use our information. Clicking on the crowd source tab on the top navigation bar always yields the most current value of the continuously updated crowd source weights.
